Jesus Strand



These are derived from investigation of the theological focus, the strand progressions over 8 years and what we believe are the key ideas our year 8 leavers will need to know and understand by the time they leave St Joseph's. Our selection of the key ideas is guided by our understanding of the Nicene Creed, the founding belief statement of the Catholic faith dating back to the Council of Nicea in AD325; Biblical teaching; Church tradition; and the Catechism of the Catholic church which the original RE curriculum documents are based on.

We are picking the lessons from our curriculum resources which best match our key ideas.  This year we are identifying the ones which will give us the best access into the key idea.  We are noting down the lessons which will add to that understanding and we will return to these in 2017


OUR TEST FOR THE JESUS STRAND

WHOLE SCHOOL ASSESSMENT FOR UNDERSTANDING JESUS

Aim is to show understanding of the big ideas across the school appropriate to the age e.g. a younger child might draw the Good Samaritan and an older child might refer to the Beatitudes or Social Justice.  Both would count as equal answers – the older child has more knowledge but both have shown understanding.  Some of our older children have very little knowledge on which to base their understanding and this test aims to reveal this.  Younger children will need a writer to record (all of these ideas are also covered during the liturgical year and children will be exposed to them).

1. Jesus is fully human (covered in year 1 & 5)

2. Jesus came to show us how to live and to save us (covered years, 2 (showed love), 4 (by example), 6 (repent and live a good life), 7 (our Saviour), 8 (Beatitudes))

3. Jesus is God (covered year 3 & 5)

1. Jesus was a human (as well as God) (Year 1+)

What was Jesus’ life like?  Draw or write and give examples

Possible answers: describe clothing, living conditions, the poor, lepers, wilderness, sandals & washing of feet, brutality – crucifixions/stonings

  • Year 1 strand has examples of life in those times.
  • Jesus’ ancestors – Luke 3:23-38, Matthew 1: 1-17
  • Jesus as a boy in the temple  Luke 2: 41-52
  • For older children some investigation into what the Holy Land is like and what it would have been like living there 2000 years ago.


2. Jesus came to show us how to live and to save us (year 2+)

a) Give an example of a Bible story where Jesus shows love (draw or write).  

Possible answers: 
Any of the healing stories:
  • Washing of feet, obeying his parents and going home at 12
  • Matthew 8:1-17, 9:18-38
  • Healing crippled man and forgiving sins: Mark 2:1-12
  • Healing deaf man Mark 7: 31-37
  • Blind man Mark 8:22-26
  • Ten lepers Luke 17: 11-19
  • Washing of feet – John 13: 1-17
  • Obeying his parents and going home - Luke 2: 41-52


b) Give an example of when Jesus saved someone in the Bible.  Explain.

  • Forgiving the sins of the crippled man before healing him Mark 2:1-12
  • Telling people to go in peace after he’s healed them, or that their faith has saved 
  • Any of the healing stories would be a 1, showing healing of the spirit would be a 3.  
  • All the healing stories are analogies for healing the spirit and saving the soul.  


c) How does Jesus save us? Explain.

Possible answers:
  • Through his death and resurrection, 
  • The Sacrament of Reconciliation, 
  • by teaching 
  • Crucifixion Luke 23:26-43
  • Resurrection: Matthew 28:1-20, Mark 8:27-30, Luke 24:1-12
  • The Roman Centurian “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof  but only say the word and my servant shall be healed.”  Matthew 8:8
  • Teaching us how to live  - Sermon on the Mount, Luke 6: 20-23, Matthew 5: 1-12
  • Love your enemies, Matthew 5: 43-48, , Luke 6:27, 28, 32-36
  • New Commandment: Matthew 8: 1-17, Mark 12:28-34, Luke 10:25-28
  • Prodigal Son, Luke 13:11-32
  • Beatitudes Luke 6:20-26


d) How does Jesus want us to live?  Give an example of something he taught or a story he told that shows us how to live.

Possible answers: 
  • Any of the parables, e.g
  • Prodigal Son = forgiveness, 
  • Good Samaritan = helping everyone/inclusion, 
  • The Beatitudes (year 8) 
  • Prodigal Son, Luke 13:11-32
  • Beatitudes Luke 6:20-26
  • Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37


3. Jesus is God (as well as human) (Year 3+)

How do we know Jesus is the Son of God?  Give examples

Possible answers: 
  • Resurrection: Matthew 28:1-20, Mark 8:27-30, Luke 24:1-12
  • Ascension: Mark 16:19-20, Luke 24:50-53
  • Transfiguration: Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2–8, Luke 9:28–36
  • Eucharist – John 6:53-39

Year 7 – Jesus Saviour and Liberator
1.     Jesus saves people from sin and death through his life death and resurrection.
2.     Scriptural titles of Jesus.

HOW TO LIVE

Year 4 – Jesus came to show people how to live and lead them to God
1.     Jesus invites people to grow in holiness through His grace.
2.     Sharing in Jesus’ mission of worshipping God and bringing about God’s reign.
3.     How Jesus exercised tika, pono and aroha.
4.     Jesus was sent to reveal God’s love and reconcile people to God.

Year 8 – Jesus’ values and the role of the Disciples today
The Beatitudes and their place in the lives of Christ’s disciples
1.     Original, personal and communal sin, the struggle against sin and Christ’s message of forgiveness.
2.     Working for justice and peace as a follower of Jesus, advocate for the poor.
3.     Jesus as Risen Lord.
